St. Gregory the Illuminator Church in Byuravan is located in Byuravan village, Ararat region, Republic of Armenia. It was founded in 1830. Under the leadership of Priest Fr. Ghazar, seven Armenian families from Persian Armenia Khoy and Salmas settlements arrived and established a village and built a church called St. Gregory the Illuminator. After 100 years of its operation in the 1930s the communist atheists stole the church keys from Priest Fr. Ghazar and gradually demolished it. In the 1980s Vartush Harutyunyan, also known as Grandma Vartush who was a resident of Buyravan village saw a dream in which. St.Gregory the Illuminator commanded: “Rub soot on your face, go from one house to another, collect money and build my house”. Obeying this heaven command Grandma Vartush together with her assistant Grandma Lida did what had been commanded in 1988-2000. During 12 years first a huge pile of soil was cleaned since the church was built from soil except for the two portals and the altar arch which are preserved in the new construction and rebuilt with limestone from the base. The entire construction process is organized and performed by Hunan Poghosyan, also known as Grandpa Hunan who had already repaired the two churches of Parakyar village and had considerable experience in this field.
In 2000 the church was anointed by Archbishop of Ararat Diocese Archbishop Fr. Navasard Kchoyan.
When I was ordained a priest in 2004 under the name Fr. Ghazar I disliked this name and I became upset. By the way, ordination was held not in the Holy See but in Yerevan St.Gregory the Illuminator Church. Later I was blessed by Holy Navasard and assigned to work in St. Gregory the Illuminator Church in Byuravan where I realized God’s providence - I came to continue the affairs of Fr. Ghazarners and I am their successor. I was ordained in St. Gregory the Illuminator Church. Therefore, St.Gregory the Illuminator is my patron, intercessor and holy, and his command that Grandma Vartush saintly performed her deed and passed away concerned not only Church in Buyravan and Grandma Vartush, but also all of us and all Armenian Churches. Historically, today we have inherited a situation in which many years ago as a nation we committed a sin and destroyed and demolished thousands of churches and today the duty of our generation is "Let’s repent by building" so that God's curse be removed from our country and nation so that our first Christian nation would be established in its virtuous and sacred mission and be filled with virtues, love and peace.
